Layout Design

The Marber grid was created in the 1960’s to accommodate book cover artwork along with a title. It utilizes the top 1/3 for text, and the rest of the page is reserved for an image. When planning the layout for the Metromoheim Museum catalog I decided that a Marber-style grid could be used for every page containing artwork. For the cover page, a traditional Marber grid was used, featuring a large title and all other text elements at the top 1/3 of the page. This highlights the title and immediately engages readers. The bottom 2/3 was reserved for an artwork teaser image.

For the artwork pages, I decided to fill the full page with the artist's work and then utilize the bottom 1/3 of the page for accompanying information, resembling an upside-down hybrid of a Marber grid and a full-page spread. The decision to employ a hybrid Marber grid and full-page spread for the artwork pages maximizes space for showcasing the artist's work while maintaining a balanced presentation with accompanying information strategically placed at the bottom instead of the top to maintain appropriate hierarchy in the design ensuring that the artwork is the focal point, and the accompanying info is secondary. Utilizing a hybrid Marber style grid for most of the pages, creates a cohesive design that showcases the artwork, and proves that even strict layout designs can be creatively used outside of the box.

The Design Process

When starting any new design work, the first thing I always do is research, research, research! I find whatever information I can get my hands on about the client goals, as well as the target audience and their preferences. Then I check out the competition and look at other businesses in the industry to determine common trends, and figure out how to stand out as different.

I then create a mood board using stock images I find that resonate with the goals of the brand. Using color psychology and theory I choose 3-4 colors that resonate with the target audience and create the desired mood, often pulling those colors straight off of the images in the mood board. This is also when I choose some fonts, or a typeface utilizing typography skills to find a great match for the brand.

If I’m setting up a photoshoot I’ll begin looking for backdrops, props, and poses to incorporate, or if I’m designing a logo I’ll start sketching out ideas. Once the mood board is ready with images, colors, and typography, and I have a polished first draft of the logo, I’ll create a prototype or mock-ups to present for feedback.

The design process is iterative, and often requires many tweaks and adjustments until it’s just right, but this process is so rewarding when the final product is ready.

5 Photo Worthy Places to Visit in Rhode Island

Since I haven’t been working or going anywhere these past few months due to Covid19 I’ve had a lot of time to think about all of the places I want to go!
I started pinning things on pinterest trying to find local gems I haven’t visited yet in Rhode Island, that might be less crowded than my usual digs and it turns out I’ve pretty thoroughly explored this little state I call home! I haven’t been everywhere but I definitely have a few favorites that I thought I’d share with you all!
These places are fun to explore and as such make awesome locations for photos too!

Number 5

ROGER WILLIAMS PARK

Roger Williams park is a classic local favorite for families, date nights, proposals, weddings, and so much more! It’s beautifully manicured and has an awesome bridge and beautiful old trees which are the perfect backdrop for photos. You can even rent a swan boat and paddle around in the water! If you’re new or visiting RI, or a local who’s just never been don’t skip Roger Williams, there’s so much to see you’ll want to go back again! Which brings us to…

Number 4

THE BOTANICAL CENTER

ok, so this is technically part of Roger Williams Park but it deserves it’s own spot! The Botanical Center is the perfect place to go in the winter when the weather is gross and you don’t want to be outside.
It’s like a warm tropical paradise with exotic trees, flowers and other plants nestled inside a beautiful greenhouse that lets in plenty of gorgeous natural light! They even offer a scavenger hunt for the kids!

Number 3

THE OCEAN

The Ocean State has no shortage of beaches and they’re all great!
Some of my favorites are Scarborough, Roger Wheeler, and Narragansett Town Beach, but there are SO many, you could probably visit a new one every weekend!

Number 2

SWAMP MEADOW COVERED BRIDGE

Nestled on a dirt back road in Foster this covered bridge is a rustic gem with the most quaint little stream running under it!
This bridge was built in honor of Rhode Island’s 350th birthday and was built 100% by local volunteers then burned by vandals shortly after and rebuilt again!

Number 1

PULASKI PARK

I’m all about that lake life vibe and Pulaski Park is everything that feels like my childhood growing up in Rhode Island. It has a swimming hole, sand, grass, pine groves, fire pits, hiking trails and an adorable bridge!
I love bringing my family there in the summer and just spending the day. The kids play in the water and the sand and I pack a lunch. We can grill hotdogs and roast s’mores at one of the fire pits take a hike, go fishing. This place has it all nestled in a beautiful natural setting so if the kids are smiling and the weather is nice it’s almost impossible to take a bad photo here!

Party Like It's Your Birthday!

I really want to bring back the “Birthday” Themed Birthday!

I don’t know about you, but I’m an avid Pinterest user and I’m seeing all of these themed birthdays with elaborate designs and matching everything with coordinating food, and I’m over here thinking that balloons and confetti and streamers are still where it’s at!

So I introduce you to… THE BIRTHDAY SESSION!

Caelix-20.jpg

Annual school pictures are a great way to see how your kids look every year as they grow, but it’s only one shot that generally doesn’t show very much of your kid’s awesome personality or little quirks at that age.

A birthday session with me is not only a fun treat for them on their birthday, but also an awesome way for you to capture who your child is at this age.
Not just what they look like!

Your kiddoes will get to come in and throw hand-fulls of confetti, make a big mess, jump around, play with balloons and just live it up in the ultimate kid birthday setting with a photo shoot that’s all about them and showcases their awesome personality.

Sometimes us parents have a tendency to stop getting regular portraits of our kids done once they’re school aged because those major milestones are past and “aint nobody got time for that” I hear ya!

Birthdays are the perfect time to schedule one though and having current pictures of your kid’s displayed around the house is so great for their self esteem!

So do your kids a favor and click that “book now” button at the bottom, find their birthday on the calendar and schedule them a session!

You’ll thank yourself later when they’re off to college and the only part of them left in the house is the pictures you can look back at!

seriously though… don’t wait!
Cuz you’re gonna blink and 3 years will have gone by!

Old FieldStone Farm

Are you looking for an awesome photo opportunity?

Old Field Stone Farm is renting out their friendliest animals for pictures! Invite an alpaca or a goat along to your next photo session and support a local farm at the same time!

What kid doesn’t want to have their picture taken with a cool animal for their birthday???

To find out more about Old Fieldstone Farm and everything else they have to offer make sure to check them out on Facebook! and if you want the awesome opportunity to have pictures done with some cool animals, just send me a message and we can discuss the details! Don’t wait, do it today!

Beach Sessions

I LOVE BEACH SESSIONS

and in The Ocean State, June is the best time to book them!

The weather is great, the water temperature is perfect and all of the kids are finally out of school so we can head there on a weekday evening right before the sun sets and get gorgeous pictures of your family having a picnic, walking in the surf, playing in the waves and building sand castles without too many other beach goers crowding up the place!
Beach sessions, as with all outdoor sessions come with a great weather guarantee.
If you’re not happy with the weather we can always reschedule for another day, but know that I’m also a big fan of those moody rain clouds, and cloudy days make for some beautiful light!
So if you’re feeling adventurous give those clouds a chance to show you how great they can be!

Check out the gallery and book a session today!

Local Frames

Did you hear about Kyle yet?

kyle-5.jpg

I was looking around at frame options and frankly I was bored with everything I found.
A lot it all just looked the same, or was really cheaply made, and it wasn’t what I wanted for my pictures, or for my clients.
I think there is a beauty is being different, in standing out and in handcrafted artisan work and Kyle’s frames hit all of these values right on the head.

He’s a family man from Scituate with a lot of talent and skill, who takes pride in what he’s building.

I had the pleasure of going to his home to see how he makes the frames and I was blown away by all of the knowledge he shared with me.
Things I never would have considered about how wood behaves, and what makes a piece last a lifetime.

this guy is the real deal!

kyle-18.jpg

He treats the wood to mimic natural aging processes without using any paint or stains so that we’re left with a beautiful, but consistently renewable product that can be created over and over.
If you get an image framed this year, you can come back every year and know that he’ll be able to recreate matching and coordinating frames without a problem.

kyle-6.jpg
kyle-14.jpg
kyle-23.jpg

I can’t wait for you to see these frames!

Come into the studio and check out what we have on display, and head over to the Scituate Art Festival, this fall to see what else he has to offer and say hello to him yourself!

Book a Wedding Photographer

September 18, 2009 started off like any other day, I woke up to an alarm on my phone.
It was my day off, but there was a mandatory meeting at work.
I picked up my phone to shut the alarm off and there was a calendar notification that said “get hitched” hmmmm I though, that snuck up fast.
About 6 months earlier when Scott gave me a ring, I handed him my phone and told him to pick a Saturday.
I had been casually planning this wedding, but was overwhelmed by all the options, and prices.
Did I want the awkward display of walking down the aisle? Did I want it outdoors or inside? I had no idea.

I didn’t book a thing.

I had the Marriage License from the town hall, but that was it.

Debating what to do we decided that it was now or never, I hadn’t planned or booked anything by now, and if we put it off, there was no guarantee it’d ever happen.
So I called City Hall and asked if I could make an appointment for that same day. Scott and I both asked a friend to be witnesses.
I went to my meeting at work, and then we went and got married!

It was awkward, and emotional, and it was wonderful

If my brother hadn’t hopped in the car at the last minute with his video camera we’d have nothing.

This year will be our 10th anniversary, and I have no pictures to include in this post.
That’s right, Kathryn Anderton has about 12585125645215466212564563 pictures of her kids, but 0 pictures of the wedding day that marked the beginning of this family I love so much.
When my girls grow up and ask about it, I’ll have no pictures, when they’re planning their day… no pictures.
Other than a wedding certificate, the only proof I have that it even happened is the shaky, grainy video my brother took, and that video is priceless.

So here’s my plea…

BOOK A WEDDING PHOTOGRAPHER!

even if you’re going to City Hall like I did, even if you’re eloping in the woods, even if it’s the most last minute or short notice wedding on the planet…

get a photographer that can provide you with beautiful photos that your children can look back at on your 10th anniversary.

Do it for me, do it for yourself, do it for your kids!

It’s the one investment you wont regret when the day is gone

.

New Studio!

It’s officially happening!

April 1st 2019 I’ll be opening the doors to my new studio in Pascoag Rhode Island!

49270417_10212393997956862_3334178443255349248_o.jpg

I couldn’t be more excited about it! With this new space I’ll be able to offer in studio sessions year round no matter what the weather is doing!

  • Monthly themed mini sessions

  • Half sessions

  • Full sessions both in studio and outdoors

  • Educational workshops

  • and Kid’s photo camp!!

Having a studio means I get to meet with you in person before your session to discuss your needs, it means I get to meet with you after your session to help you order your prints, albums and wall art, it means more opportunities for your kids to get to know me and feel comfortable in the space.

With about 4 weeks until the studio opens I want to offer you all a deal!

If you’re interested in booking a session with me at all this year… whether it’s an outdoor fall session for your whole family, or an in studio cake smash, a Christmas mini session, or pictures for your baby due in October. I’m offering to include all of your digital images with the session fee when you book before the studio opens!

This is a HUGE savings opportunity that wont come around again, so don’t wait!

Mr and Mrs Piccirillo

I had the pleasure of photographing an intimate wedding a few weeks ago at the Crestwood Country Club in Rehoboth Massachusetts and it was such a wonderful experience and beautiful ceremony.
Janelin and Alexis have the most loving group of friends and family, I can’t even count the number of times I had tears in my eyes!
Here are just a few of my favorites from the day!

Hello

I’m Kathryn Anderton
Also frequently referred to as Kate, Katie and Kat… but never Kathy! ( long story )
I LOVE taking pictures, and because I’m basically a big kid with an art education I love creating artistic images of kids.
I also really love taking pictures of other artists, creators, families and small business owners at work!

My style is kind of a quirky, documentary collides with fine art that gets my own little twist put on it.

Nothing makes me happier than hanging out with a new person no matter what the age, and getting to know them while I learn and capture their true personality!
I’m not that photographer that’s gonna force you into weird poses and make you smile.
I’m that photographer that’s gonna pull real expressions and emotions out right along with your true nature and characteristics.
